 2006

Happy new year anglers.  I hope all of your holidays were well.  What a year this one should be.  The Ohio Division of wildlife has pointed out that the 2003 hatch was the best in recent years which means there are plenty of legal sized walleye for you to catch in Lake Erie!!  Our yellow perch fishing should also continue to be excellent.

January 8th, 2006.......last week we had rainfall on top of the snow we had on the ground which  overflowed the streams and left them blown-out and un-fishable. Since then they have subsided and today we managed to take a few steelhead trout  in the 10# + category.  Since the start of winter in north eastern Ohio we have had fair weather.  This makes for very comfortable winter steelhead fishing as long as the condition of the streams co-operate.  The temperature for the next week should continue to be good and so should our stream fishing as long as we do not get too much rain.  Tying flies, fishing streams, getting Lucky Strike boat parts ready for the season and leaving you a message or two.....the captain's work is never done.  If you are pursuing those winter steelhead in the streams may you be sure footed and have screaming drags........Captain Art

January 14th...........The night of the 2005 Mohawk Valley awards banquet and a special congratulations for a member of our team, Mark Franko who was awarded "Mr. bass - 2005"  Read a re-cap below of the events which led Mark to this victory.  Mark, congratulations once again and thank you for wearing the team "Lucky Strike" logo on your way to capturing that prestigious bass fishing title...........Captain Art

Up to January 16th.......Friday the 13th & what winter weather we are having.  It rained all night on Friday which left the rivers and streams high and muddy on Saturday.  Took a look & even a try but with all given conditions plus the wind howling at 40+ mph it was best to just go get breakfast and call it a day.  Sunday was a little better water clarity.  It was flowing higher than Saturday but being it cleared a little I managed to have over 10 steelhead on before noon but only landed four.  They were taking chartreuse glow yarn and were all feisty fresh fish.  Had problems with eyes freezing as it was very cold last night.  We should continue to have some mild temperatures the next few days so I would expect the water quality and fish bite to only get better.  The fish have been hard on this fly reel and literally wore it out so I'm getting out of here for now and in pursuit of a new fly rod & reel.  Good health to all......Captain Art

Up to January 28th..........The trout have been a little slow for us the past few days.  The streams have had some ups and downs with current and water clarity due to the rains.  The temperatures have remained very mild hovering between 45-50 degrees.  This has made very comfortable trout  fishing conditions which seems to have brought everyone out.  Not so popular for the ice fishermen though as they have had near zero good ice this season.

February 4-5.........Rain, rain, & more rain........the streams are un-fishable right now.  The weather is supposed to turn cold and bring a very snowy Sunday.  Lets see what the next few days bring us and we will post a new report then........Captain Art

Up to March 21st........The rains had continued to have the streams very high and muddy until last Monday, 3/13.  The temperatures have been mild and the suckers have been showing up.  I took the water temperature in the river last week and it was 40 degrees.  Late last week after the streams cleared and lowered the trout were on fire for a couple of days.  We weren't out over the weekend but the reports I got said the fishing has been hot or cold depending on where you are geographically.  Today it snowed a little in the morning and I may give it a try myself in the afternoon.  Soon I need to get the boat gear started for the season.  The weekend boat charters are filling quickly so if you need to have a weekend charter during our prime walleye season please get in touch & get your dates confirmed.  Happy fishing until then........Captain Art

Up to Mid April.............The steelhead have been on the spawning beds and site fishing for them as long as conditions allow has really been awesome!  Many hookups with large fish are the norm.  The good thing about this type of fishing is that you know exactly where the fish are and not guessing as to their locations.  This will be the end of our winter-spring trips and from here on it will be boat fishing on the Lucky Strike.  So as we close a wonderful 2005-2006 trout season all indications are that the boat fishing for 2006 will be a banner year.  Stay tuned for more action and pictures for 2006 and watch this summer for some added attractions.......video clips of our trips!  Until that next time may we all be blessed with good weather and better fishing,  Captain Art

Beginning of May.......... I really needed to get down to work and get the Lucky Strike ready for the 2006 season.  I had it apart a little more than usual checking things out so that we have a trouble free fishing season.  We had the drive shafts down at Ted Wise's machine shop and they checked out ok.....thank you Ted.  I pulled the transmissions also and checked the flex plates and all was ok.  We dropped the props off in Huron and had them on the computer.  They will be fined tuned and balanced and ready for the season.  So now it's putting everything back together with things such as new cutlass bearings and seals & re-aligning the engines.  All will be ready for action the minute you step aboard.  So, as I ready things for our fun days on the water keep yourself and families safe and we will see you on the water.        Captain Art

May 20th.........Youth trout derby at the Conneaut Fish & Game Club & what a turnout there was!  Despite the cold wet whether there were over 300 children registered.  There were plenty of trout in the pond and plenty of prizes for the kids.  Just watching their faces was just priceless as they caught fish with their parents, grandparents and other relatives helping.  This year Captain Art put a few larger trout in the pond.  We announced that Lucky Strike Sportfishing would give a perch charter away as the grand prize if any youth caught the largest one..........a 33" long 14 1/2 pound female trout!  Guess what?  One lucky angler (Thomas Wickline) did just that!  Thomas caught the fish Ohio trout on a small piece of worm.  He is pictured below with his winning catch.

Congratulations once again Thomas and the Wickline family, we are looking forward to your family's charter!  Pictured above clockwise from left are Thomas, Shelley, Alex and Dylan.

............through the end of May.........our fishing has been slow, slow, slow for everything!   Right now we are into our fourth day of good weather so things should start to change soon.  Prior to that we had 13 days of continuous rain and cold which kept the water temperatures down.  The whole charter fleet is now geared up and ready so lets see what this next week will bring

to June 6th........our perch fishing has been slow and changing day to day from slow to terrible and back while our walleyes are starting to come in but also slow right now.  I have the feeling that when our season kicks into gear it's really going to take off and we will see good numbers for walleye and perch.  We recently had to move someone which left us Saturday, August 12th open.......right during our prime season!  This is our only open Saturday all season so call if you want it.  Wishing everyone well until then...............Captain Art

to June 28th........although the perch fishing has started with tough times this year it is now starting to come into it's own...........but the walleye!  Just as the Ohio DNR predicted this is a banner year due to sheer numbers of fish in the lake and they have been readily taking small spoons on jet divers as well as off dipsys.  The fish have started moving deeper in the water column.  Anyone wishing walleyes do not hesitate.....the bite has been on and hopefully will continue throughout our season.  I look forward to seeing you on the water.      Captain Art

through mid July...............walleye is the name of the game and here in Ashtabula, Ohio the fishing is absolutely as good as it gets.  Right now limits are more the rule than the exception.  Customers have seen days on the water which have rivaled the "heydays" of the 80's.  Good weather, good fishing, God Bless America what more could anyone ask for!  We have had many trophy charter days this year and how wonderful it is to see all these trophy sized fish make their way to the net......literally!  The Wickline family (grand prize winner from the spring youth trout derby) will be fishing with us this Sunday, July 16th.  I'm sure the word is out but if anyone you know has not heard pass it on.........the walleyes are on fire in Ashtabula Ohio!  gotta go......got some on      Captain Art

to August 7th................the walleyes have been on fire here for over two months now.  We have sent many a party home with limits of fish and I will post some new pictures soon.  As an added bonus right now the yellow perch have also been co-operating very well.  What a season this has been!  It's a good feeling when the weather and fish have been as good as they have and certainly this year the walleye have been just as good as they get.  Thank everyone who has come to fish with us and I look forward to seeing everyone who is still coming.........until then,    Captain Art

to the first of September...........and I'm starting to wonder where the summer went already.  The walleye for the past few months have just been as good as they get.  It won't be too long & the trout will be in the streams in good numbers.  The perch are co-operating.  We have not been able to get on the water for a week now due to high waves.  I hope the easterly blows don't shove too much cold water in our area and slow our fishing down.  The Labor Day weekend is on us.  When I get back on the water after these gale force blows I'll let you know what's happening.  Until then keep those rods bent & lines tight...............Captain Art

Through the end of September...........and I can hardly believe where the season has gone.  Check back in a month or so and see some of the new pics on the web of this seasons fish and happy anglers.  I caught bright silver steelhead trout in the streams the other day.  If anyone has an interest in the trout we will be guiding trips in all of the tribs from boat out until about Easter 2007.  I have an early end coming to the boating season this year as I am putting everything away and headed to Wyoming in mid October to do some hunting.  Good fishing, good company, thank everyone who has fished with us & God Bless America!!       Captain Art

Through the end of October...........the boat is now in storage and our fishing will be in the streams until we put it back in the water for 2007.  To sum up our 2006 fishing season: this was as good as any fishing gets on Lake Erie or any lake for that matter.  Limits were more the rule than the exception and many an angler had an early day on the water rewarded by a cooler full of fish.  Remember......early bookings get the prime dates and weekends go very quickly.  Drop the captain an email if you wish to charter with us in 2007 and we will pencil you in & send your confirmation.........gotta go, trout on!      Captain Art

Through mid December...........I will be out of town in Florida until mid January 2007.  I may have limited computer access, so if anyone has emailed me and I do not respond I will contact you when I get back.

The steelhead trout have been very cooperative and we have had good water in the rivers & streams this year compared to low water at the start of the season last year.  The trout have been taking sucker spawn and small glow eggs with good consistency.  Live bait floaters have been doing well on black jigs & maggots and fresh skein.   We have had access all season so far and just starting to have some cold weather and snow which is supposed to warm a little in the next week.  I don't think frozen streams will shut us off for quite some time.

We are getting bookings for the 2007 boat fishing season and I'm sure the weekends will go real fast.  Contact us for gift certificates or Christmas presents.

Once again, thank everyone who has visited us this season.  Let me wish everyone a very Merry Christmas and happy New Year and a safe, healthy, and happy holiday season for every one of you.

Trout time gotta go.........Captain Art
