CHARTERS IN OHIO
For Ohio
trophy fishing charters and news or
information check with Captain Art Miller, your Lake Erie fishing guide.
Captain Art will post Lake Erie walleye fishing reports here or you can join a
mailing list if you wish and have them emailed directly to you. We are
hoping for another good year on Lake Erie with plenty of legal sized walleyes
and some of those trophy wall hangers to catch.

2009
Happy new year anglers.
I hope all of you have had an excellent holiday season and wish you a prosperous New Year with excellent health and
happiness!
.......early
January
and we finally started to get to our real winter. It has snowed about a
foot since yesterday and they are predicting about another foot by tomorrow
(January 10th) The steelhead has been
good and the fish have readily been taking fresh skein & egg sacks but.......I
think we have finally seen the last of open water for awhile. The streams
are freezing more by the hour and soon there will no longer be any open water
access. Our next
steelhead fishing will no doubt be drilling holes in the ice!
Anyone who has visited us
during the last two years knows that the fishing has been awesome and hopefully
2009 will once again be a great fishing year. Thank all of you for your
continued patronage and I look forward to seeing everyone once again in 2009.
Our economy has certainly
been in turmoil and I understand the difficulty and associated costs everyone
faces when putting together your fishing charters.
For 2009 we have
chosen to keep our rates frozen. The rates shown on this web are remaining
the same as they were in 2008!!!
Good friends, calm seas & tight
lines......God bless you all and God bless America.....Captain Art
..........mid
February
and the weather just doesn't know what it wants to do. There was a rescue
of over a hundred fisherman who were on the ice on Lake Erie when a large
section broke loose and floated away. The US Coast Guard and several
private air boats rescued the people then afterwards their equipment such as
fishing gear and four-wheelers. Unfortunately one person died during this
ordeal.
We had been fishing through the ice in the
streams for steelhead trout when the weather allowed us. We had plenty of
snow on the ground and it warmed for a few days which then broke the ice up,
blew the streams out and flooded everything. After waiting for over a week
for everything to settle again we were able to get on the open water of the
rivers for a few days and caught bright, fresh steelhead trout. After
those few days it got cold again and it has now frozen up the streams again &
left us no access.
Well, everyday is one step closer to
spring and soon there will be some good steelhead fishing.
Until then.........good friends, calm seas & tight
lines......God bless you all and God bless America.....Captain Art
............we're through
March
and into April already - wow! The last of March ended the Grand River
Tackle steelhead trout tournament. I ended up (with ties) in tenth place.
Better than not placing at all and I hope to enjoy the banquet this Sunday -
thanks Bruce and Kelly.
After the thaw the rivers and main lake
around here seemed to warm faster than usual. Most of the steelhead
spawning activity in the Ashtabula River is winding down. I see less and
less fish while walking great distances. The fishing on the big lake in
the western basin is heating up.
During the annual captain's conference during
March we heard good expectations for Lake Erie walleye fishing during 2009 from
the ODNR Hopefully our fishing will lead up to those expectations
and bring us another banner year.
Mark your calendars once again for May 16th -
the annual Conneaut Fish and Game Club's youth trout derby. This is a
great event and it gets more popular each year. If you know of a child who
would like to fish please by all means get them to the derby. As in the
last few years Lucky Strike Sport fishing will be sponsoring the grand prize for
any lucky angler who captures the fish Captain Art put in the pond. The
grand prize is an all expense paid four person perch charter!

through May.........congratulations
to Tyler Houser of Conneaut, OH for his winning fish in the youth trout derby at
the annual Conneaut fish & Game Club event. Tyler & a parent will be going
on a steelhead trout fishing trip with Captain Art. Tyler took the
constellation prize with his winning trout which was the largest trout taken on
the day of the derby. We look forward to that stream fishing trip.
through mid June...........As
far as the weather goes it has been cold for the most part with many nights
dipping into the 40's. We had freeze warnings up two weeks ago! This
cold weather has set us back a couple of weeks. I guess the last few years
have spoiled us around here as they found us on great walleye fishing with good
limits coming in from the end of May.
The fishing in Ashtabula Ohio has been
slow.....(at least for the walleyes) We are catching them but not in great
numbers like you have experienced the last few years at this time. There
is a ton of bait outside of our harbor and hopefully we will be able to hold
great numbers of walleye in our area as the ones migrating arrive. Then we
can deliver the excellent walleye fishing the people have come to expect!
Year in year out the visitors who arrive in Ashtabula Ohio come here for our
renowned walleye charters. Many trophies for the wall are the rule rather
than the exception. Lake Erie has a long standing reputation as the
walleye capital of the world & I have dubbed our area as: "Ashtabula Ohio
fishing charters - home of legendary walleye catches"
We have had some awesome smallmouth days with
big fish and fish Ohio awards (over 20") such as the one below. The perch
fishing has been fair with no great numbers coming in but the sizes have been
good. Hopefully as the season progresses and the water and weather heats
up so will the walleye fishing.

Until then.........good friends, calm seas & tight
lines......God bless you all and God bless America.....Captain Art
through the end of June..........Finally
we got on a decent walleye bite this past week. After a long lengthy wait
the weather and walleye both heated up. We managed to pull limits on a few
days & the others were in the high teens & twenty counts of fish. On a few
of the days we captured a few steelhead trout. I hope this will continue
throughout the rest of the season. I don't expect it to be like the last
few years which were just "as good as it gets" but hopefully it will be good
enough to make the customers happy and uphold the fish catching and quality
reputation which Ashtabula Ohio has been known for.
Until then.........good friends, calm seas & tight
lines......God bless you all and God bless America.....Captain Art
through mid July..........For
everyone expecting to come to Ashtabula for the slaughter such as you have
experienced during 2006, 07 & 2008 it's just not happening. we're back to
fishing and hopefully we can uphold the reputation the area brings and make our
customers happy in the process. We have been pulling decent fish numbers
on our good days but we have had to work for them. Our perch charters have
had mostly limits of fish except for the tough weather & wind change days.
It seems like everyone who has joined us have been pleased with the
trip......after all the "trip" is what it's all about. Having a great day
on the water and catching some quality fish in the process.......what else could
anyone ask for? Everywhere in the world there is a cycle with sport
fishing catches........it's never good always. It cycles through good &
bad, hot & cold or up and down, whatever way you wish to call it.
Many thanks for all of those who have visited
thus far and I'm looking forward to showing the rest of you who are coming an
excellent day of fishing on Lake Erie.
Until then.........good friends, calm seas & tight
lines......God bless you all and God bless America.....Captain Art
nearing the season end, the beginning of
October..............well here we are
nearing the end of the season & I have hardly written any fishing news since
mid-July. Being a one man band & fishing nearly every day leaves very
little time for computer work. Most importantly I have to keep the Lucky
Strike & all the gear in tip-top shape for the next daily fishing adventure.
Although our area of the lake started slow it came along like gang busters again
with limit catches of awesome sized walleye & yellow perch making their way to
the fish cutters. Speaking of fish cutters my hats off to Mel & the crew
at River Marine who keep customers happy with the quality fish cutting they
offer. Thanks again to everyone who has traveled to Ashtabula Ohio.
I hope we lived up to our reputation of producing quality fish catches &
continue Lake Erie's reputation as being the walleye capital of the world.
Until then.........good friends, calm seas & tight
lines......God bless you all and God bless America.....Captain Art
mid October..............The
weather has been very disappointing & we have had to cancel nearly all of our
charters for the last few weeks. When we did not have gale force blows the
predictions were 4-6 footers for most of the other days. The lake has not
had a few good days to settle down.......it still looks like chocolate milk.
Our marina officially closed on the 15th of October. The Lucky Strike is
scheduled to come out of the water on the 20th. So as I near the
completion of the 2009 season I'll thank everyone who visited this year, wish
you all a good winter & hopefully see you again in 2010.
As far as the stream fishing the trout are
showing up. The conditions should only get better during the next month.
For the wading fishermen.......I hope to see you for some of the silver action.
Until then.........good friends, calm seas & tight
lines......God bless you all and God bless America.....Captain Art
mid November........
We finally got into what I would call some Indian summer weather with
temperatures rising into the upper 60's. For the few who managed to keep their boats in the water it
has rewarded them with catches of large yellow perch. It took so long this
year to wait for that news that almost every boat was out of the water and of
course most all marinas were officially closed. The steelhead trout so far
have not been particularly aggressive or in any great numbers in the rivers.
I don't know whether the gale force blows on the big lake have had something to
do with it or the temperatures are not right yet. I'm sure the better
steelhead fishing in the rivers is yet to come. So as we near Thanksgiving
please enjoy your times with your families and if you're traveling make it a
safe journey.
Until then.........good friends, calm seas & tight
lines......God bless you all and God bless America.....Captain Art
